THE BOY WITH A SKULL IN A BOX...

Copyright REBELLION

Let's be honest now - if you carried a skull around with you in a box you'd be considered decidedly weird.  Having said that, sometime back in the '70s, I bought a life-size skull by REVELL and painted it with a greenish glow-in-the-dark paint.  One evening, me and some pals took it out with us, and you should've seen the startled looks we got as I walked around with Skully (the tooth is out there) tucked under my arm.  It really was a case of exaggerated, open-mouthed, 'double-take' stares of shock and horror.  Wotta larf.  Wotta tit!  I wouldn't do it now of course, but back then I was young, crazy and reckless (in a conservative - small 'c' - kind of way), and was up for a jolly jape or two.

Anyway, that's enough talk about my favourite subject (me) - time for a look at what brings use all here.  A four page BRIAN'S BRAIN strip from the SMASH! Annual for 1967.  O joy!

  1. I could see a re-imagining of this character in a twisted tone, that would be pretty good.

I like the logo for some uncanny reason.
Not suitable for the re-boot though.

  2. Could always call it Sam's Skull I suppose, eh? In Gothic letters.

  3. This would probably be the followup up to the Iron Eater...

  4. I'd have to check my back issues before I could say for sure, AJ, but I'd imagine you're right.

  5. Sorry, I was rather vague there! I meant my follow up to the Iron Eater... as in my next sculpture...

  6. You could call it that,Kid.
That ol' goth market wont go away.
    The Iron Eater?
    Sounds great.

  7. T'internet is a wonderful thing.
Did a search and would you know it popped up on AJ's blog.
I do remember The iron Eaters, especially the matchbox.
What is the connection between the two strips?

  8. Ah, right, AJ. Thought you meant a previous strip. Sounds like something I'd once read.

Don't know, Baab. Same artist maybe? I thought AJ was talking about a previous strip, then I thought he wasn't, now I think he was again. I'll have to look at my issues of Smash!

  9. Arrrgh, I knew it! Now I'm confusing everyone! (That's what I get for posting comments so late at night!)
baab, what I meant was- Since I made a sculpture of the 'Iron Eater' I have been thinking of a "follow up" sculpture to sit alongside it and I though the brain would be a nice option. Really sorry to hijack the post Kid and confuse you all!

  10. Don't worry about it, AJ. I'm in a permanent state of confusion anyway.

  11. lol well that's something I guess! Unfortunately my state of confusion sits around me like a bubble and has a habit sucking people in if they get too close... ;)

  12. I do hope I don't confuse matters any more, but at first I thought you were both talking about The Iron Eaters - an excellent centre-spread in The Beezer, second only to The Jellymen in excitement!
Anyway, thanks for more Brian's Brain ( yes, I remember the first post!), it was one of the highlights of Smash for me and not having had the annuals, never seen this one before!

  13. JP - you've confused matters even more (for me anyway)! As for Brian's Brain - there's more to come.

    1. Well, guess what? I'm going to confuse matters even more now, because SOMEWHERE out there in the wonderful world of blogs, SOMEONE on his blog has model iron eater (sponge) in a matchbox and I believe you, yes YOU! posted a comment about it! You may have enquiried whether or not the box would close?

  17. Took a look, remember it now. Getting old's no fun, eh?

  18. Wait! Wait! Wait! Now I'm confused...I made an Iron Eater??

    ReplyDelete
  19. If YOU didn't, then it must've been an impostor. AJ.

  20. Not him again! I thought I was rid of that whole Clone Saga thing!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Tell you what, AJ - if I see him I'll give him a battering for you. That should teach the cad a lesson.

  22. Be careful though, last time I approved someone giving one of my doppelgangers a good-hiding, mistakes were made and it took a long time for my wounds to heal... Well, I assumed they had made a mistake...

  23. Better than being flung down a smokestack and burned 'though, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Are you threatening me Kid? Look I'm sorry I caused all that confusion, really I am!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Me threaten someone? Heaven forfend! But being flung down a smokestack is what usually happens to a clone in a Marvel comic, isn't it? Although that was the '70s - maybe things have changed since then.

  28. I've been very happy to see UK comics characters from the Power Comics era.

I'd also like to see IPC's Barry and Boing again.

  29. Ooer! I've still to show you some Whizzers from Oz, but I'll post a Barry & Boing later today sometime, Dougie.
