A cascading cornucopia of cool comics, crazy cartoons, & classic collectables - plus other completely captivating & occasionally controversial contents. With nostalgic notions, sentimental sighings, wistful wonderings, remorseful ruminations, melancholy musings, rueful reflections, poignant ponderings, & yearnings for yesteryear. (And a few profound perplexities, puzzling paradoxes, & a bevy of big, beautiful, bedazzling, buxom Babes to round it all off.)

I have started to appreciate these old HB comics a lot more as I have gotten older - I loved them as a kid (5- 9ish) but "outgrew" the comics (still liked the cartoons till I was about 12ish). About 5 years ago I saw a few of these in City Centre Comics in Glasgow for £1 each (the Gold Key editions) and picked them up lovely stuff ( the Yogi Bear newspaper strip, which I found on line is really good not sure if you've seen them- some on link below).
ReplyDeleteStrange that such a popular character hasn't had a recent re vamp (apart format he 2010 live action / animated movie) in cartoon form - I think its only been the odd special the last one around 14 /15 years ago - My favourite Cartoon character from that time on TV (60s early 70s)was always Atom Ant

I don't think the TV version of Yogi ever went into the city - he stayed permanently in Jellystone Park, didn't he ?
ReplyDeleteWish I'd seen these Gold Key issues, McScotty - I'd have snapped them up in double-quick time. Yup, I've seen the newspaper strips - the Yowp blog has been in my blog list for a few years now. I remember seeing Atom Ant on Cartoon Cavalcade - or was that Fearless Fly?
ReplyDelete******
I'd have to watch all the cartoons again in order to give you a definitive answer as regards the TV show, CJ, but he left the confines of Jellystone in the 1964 cinema release 'Hey there, it's Yogi Bear!'
I would be interested in a book telling the whole story of HB cartoons if such a book exists. Way back in the late 50's I used to have Huck Hound weekly every week and would get anything on paper to do with HB cartoons. I then discovered the US Dell HH comics, but then went on to their TV western range. Then I got into Classics Illustrated, but ALL of these were forgotten about when 2 school chums brought a load of DC comics into school. The rest, as they say, is history....
ReplyDeleteMcScotty, - will check that link out next, ta!
By the way, did anyone else, as kids, notice the uncanny resemblance between the park ranger and Officer Dibble?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure such a book must exist, JP. I've got one solely about The Flintstones, plus one called Hanna-Barbera Treasury, in which I saw (for the first time since my childhood) the box for the Marx Yogi Bear scooter toy. (And which helped me track down a boxed example.) I think that any 'likeness' between Smith and Dibble is more down to style than substance, but Smith seemed to evolve over the years, so maybe one of his intermediate looks was more like Dibble.
ReplyDeleteI have studied their entire output on Wikipedia ( I'm such a geek!),which was an interesting read. My brother and me used to love the hilarious " Wait Till Your Father Gets Home " on Sat. mornings.
ReplyDeleteI remember that one, JP. Haven't seen it in years.
ReplyDeleteKid, I was going to ask if the Ranger had a name because I couldn't remember one but I see you've said it was Smith. I remember Wait Till Your Father Gets Home too - the opening title sequence is on YouTube, I was watching it only recently. I must have a look for some Yogi Bear cartoons on YouTube too.
ReplyDeleteTake a look at the movie from a few years back as well, CJ - it's not a bad little film.
ReplyDeleteIt was Fearless Fly (another of my childhood favs) that appeared on Cartoon Cavalcade kid -
ReplyDeleteThere's a nice (but strange) YouTube clip of a type of "fund starter" (forget what they call these things with folk looking for £ to start a project) that shows (very short)clips of some legendary HB artists (inc Doug Wildey) that you may find interesting (or annoying not sure which)

John P - There was a book on the History of HB in 1999 (link to Amazon below ) and the HB Treasury which may be the one that Kid refers to (review below Amazon link) but I think these may be limited in scope.

Col, I'm going to download that theme tune for nostalgia!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the links, McScotty, I'll check them out. I'm sure JP will be there before me.
ReplyDeleteThanks, McScotty, you are a font of link knowledge!
ReplyDeleteIIRC, Yogi usually stayed in the park in the TV cartoons. But there was at least one where he somehow ended up going home (to an apartment in the city) with a tourist. The guy was a henpecked husband, and his nagging wife called the police. Meanwhile, the park rangers tracked Yogi down and took him back to the park. When the city police arrived, the wife was babbling hysterically about a bear in her home, but there was no sign of him, and the husband denied knowing anything about it, so they took her away in a straight jacket while the husband chuckled.

I've got the DVD set of Yogi's own show, TC, so when I get a chance, I'll check and see if that cartoon is on it. It could have been on the Yogi cartoon on the Huckleberry Hound show.
