ZOWIE! TOPPS 1966 BATMAN CARDS - PART THREE...

Another half-dozen images from the 1966 BATMAN cards by TOPPS (1989 reissue set).  Paste your peepers onto these paper piccies, and you'll be transported to the mid-'60s faster than you can say "Atomic batteries to power!"

    More? Absolutely Kid, as many as you like. The Topps cards are (probably) still my all time favorite Bat-art & I had full collections of the red, blue & black bat sets. It's wonderfully nostalgic to see them again.

    A couple of years ago, I took the opportunity to do a small homage to these cards in a private commission. You can see it here on the client's own blog (copy & paste, natch!)

    Took a look, Staz - very nice indeed. Note that some of the '60s cards are better than the others. Some look like paintings, others look like coloured drawings.

    That's right. The best ones are clearly the work of Norm Saunders, other hands were obviously at work for others. I used to like the fact that when he did close ups he would paint Batman & Robin's eyes, always made it seem more 'real' to me as a child. I suspect that was as a result of an order from on high to make them look as much like the TV show as possible.
    My favorite of all the cards (which might not have been a Saunders illustration ironically) was from one of the jigsaw back sets, & showed Batman being hung out of a window by Robin as he caught a toddler falling from above. The reason I liked it was that, to me, it looked the most like the TV show versions. It was a few years before I discovered that Batman existed in comics, & for a long time Batman was to me a TV character first & foremost.

    I think Bob Powell did the layouts on at least some of the cards, Staz, and may have actually done a bit more than that on some of them. I think I knew Batman was a comic character before the TV show, but I'm not 100% sure.
