What always struck me about these things was that the artists, while undoubtedly competent craftsmen, had no feeling for the material whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteQuite understandable - they were from a different generation, after all (and a job's a job) - but it was missing or messing up on the small details that made work like this slightly frustrating to a pre-puberty obsessive like me.
It didn't have that look of absolute authenticity, which I find endlessly fascinating these days as a grumpy old bugger-the-detail codger.
I know what you're saying, B, but there were so many slightly 'off-model' Batmen in those days, that I soon made allowances for any slight differences. There's still something about that cover that grabs me 'though.
