BLIMEY! MIKE NOBLE'S FIRST FIREBALL XL5 STRIP...

Time for another MIKE NOBLE illustrated FIREBALL XL5 adventure from the pages of TV CENTURY 21.  This, in fact, is Mike's very first Fireball strip after GRAHAM COTON had drawn the initial episodes in the first five issues of the comic.  However, not wanting to do things by halves, I've thrown in two parts for the price of one. No, don't thank me - generosity is my middle name.

    And what a debut! Plenty of colour and movement here and a helluva lot going on out in space, and all of it rendered in that clean and confident style of his. The Anderson series certainly attracted some talent when you look back at the artists involved over the years-Noble, Bellamy and Embleton being just three that spring to mind. Great to see these.

    They were definitely amongst the very best artists at the time who worked inj comics, Phil - that's for sure. Shame there's not a comic like TV21 around today.

    He was a genius, wasn't he... if only all licensed comics could be as good as this. Imagine Doctor Who adventures with stories like this, instead of the clinical-looking punfests they are.

    Still, it does bother me that they can breathe in space, but it's easy to look past (maybe thier helmets are made of futuristic, ultra-transparent glass).

      Oxygen pills. Suggested to Gerry Anderson by Terry Nation, to avoid the problems of puppets and space helmets

    Nah, Mike - they use oxygen pills. You're right - Mike Noble is one of the true greats of British illustrators. Keep your eyes peeled for the next part.

    I wonder if Terry Nation got the idea from Tony Hancock, who is reputed to have given him the idea of The Daleks (though not the name)?
