Back in July of last year, I posted the first part of On The SCENE Presents (The) SUPER HEROES, a 1966 one-shot (I think) magazine by WARREN which took a look at screen adaptations of various well-known super characters. Well, I guess it's time for Part Two (remember, I did say it was an occasional series), so here, for your viewing pleasure, is the enigmatic and phantasmagorical PHANTOM. Enjoy!

AFAIK, the magazine was a one-shot, even though the title "On the Scene Presents..." sounds like a series. I never saw another issue. The Super-Hero one was advertised along with other Warren back issues in the back pages of Famous Monsters of Filmland in the 1970s. The Phantom article was reprinted from Screen Thrills Illustrated #6. From what I've heard, the movie serial was made on a very low budget, and Lee Falk was not happy with it. Still, Tom Tyler looked perfect, and Frank (Dr. Zarkov) Shannon played a scientist in it, so it could not be all bad.

ReplyDeleteThe Phantom is having a bit of a renaissance here in the US. In the last three years three different “lines” of hardcover books have come out featuring him. First were the daily strips, another for his Sunday and another for his comic books. This series has the Gold Key, Charlton and King comics.

Thanks, Barry. I've got a Phantom comic from a good few years ago which I think was by DC Comics. He also appeared in a comic in the U.K. back in the '60s called TV Tornado.
