I remember one bar that is no longer made but can't remember the name...it was kind of a toffee type candy bar if I remember correctly, for some reason I want to say a manhattan bar or similar, I remember really liking it but can't remember the name!!
ReplyDeleteThe name 'Manhattan Bar' sounds familiar, but I can't associate a taste with it. Anyone else help?
ReplyDeletePeople really dig that Pink Panther! That car was up for sale a while back I recall.

Thanks Chris. It really is a cool looking car.
ReplyDeleteA bar I remember was Cabana, coconut and cherry covered in chocolate. I loved them.
ReplyDeleteYup, I remember Cabana. Anyone remember Aztec bars? They were brought out again for a limited time back in 2000.
ReplyDeleteThe Pink Panther bar tasted like the strawberry milk that I recall from a vending machine in Girvan in about 69 or 70.
ReplyDeleteI was keen on the Bar Six, which was basically a chocolate wafer. I liked the Caramac bar in theory but the reality was a bit sickly.
Liked Bar Six myself, Dougie - shame it's no longer around. Still have the odd Caramac now and again. It was the favourite bar of one of my pals back in the late '60s, early '70s.
ReplyDeleteI forgot Treets, Skippy and the prince of 70s bars, the Supermousse. Sadly, Fry's Five Centres went to the great confectioner in the sky in the early 90s.
ReplyDeleteI had forgotten about Old Jamaica too. Horrid!
Treets still exist of course, they were just rebranded as M&Ms a good while back - although I'm told that the Treets name was revived a year or two ago for sale in one of the large supermarkets. I did a post about Fry's Five Centres some time ago - I'll link to it when I get a chance. Personally, Dougie, I loved Old Jamaica, but it wasn't wise to eat a full bar at once.
ReplyDeleteI remember that Pink Panther bar just tasting a bit sickly sweet so I wasn't a fan - now old Jamaica I did like with the scrolled logo on each chunck and feeling grown up as it had a rum flavour. Does anyone remember Icebreaker or Mint Cracknel (my favourite with an MB Bar (which I had a few years again and was pure sugar - was it a TEXAN bar that L M Tea remembers at all? McScotty
ReplyDeleteMcScotty, I remember the bars you mentioned, but I never tasted the Mint Cracknel one 'cos I don't like mint. MB Bars are still available in some small shops, but I don't think they're made by the original manufacturers. Also, the chocolate isn't quite as good as it used to be. Nice to see they're still around 'though.
ReplyDeleteoh instant hypno-suggestion
ReplyDeletestrawberry flavour, but kind of soapy at the same time!
probably delicious at the time.
i think a manhattan was like a texan..now what was a texan..vanilla (kind of)toffee with chocolate covering
quite good.
Aztec..I even remember a tv advert, temples and exotica and chocolate.
there was also a really cheap chocolate bar without a wrapper which was white and brown chocolate and the shape resembled a wookie ???
it was the MB bars that brought that one in.
All this talk of MB Bars has made me hungry for one. Think I'll buy a few the first chance I get.
ReplyDeleteDo they still make Texan bars? I used to like them but they gave me jaw ache. :)
ReplyDeleteHackers.
I don't think they do, but I'm not 100% sure.
ReplyDeleteSadly Texans are no longer made although they made a brief come back in 2005 - they were chewy toffee bars see link for details instant flashback - MB Bars may disappoint you now very sweet and cheap chocolate (seemd to go with "Frying pans" if you remember them)- I used to loveChelsea Whoppers they are still tasty to be fiar but the used to be thick now they are like a sheet of paper - McScotty

Yeah, I've previously tasted what passes for an MB Bar these days, McScotty - but I've got a hankering to buy some just for old times' sake.
ReplyDeleteMight buy some Swizzels Fizzers as well. And some Love Hearts. (Sigh.)
The greatest candy bar of all time is undoubtedly the Jelly Mallow.
ReplyDeleteWhat a shock to the system to see the Bar Six, resplendent in international orange, like a punch to the solar plexus.
Never heard of the Jelly Mallow. Can you supply details?
ReplyDeleteDetails of the Jelly Mallow. Has my life really come to this?
ReplyDeleteIt came in a twin pack laid out on a card gurney, Bounty-style. Flat on the bottom and rounded on top like an elongated dome. Clad in beautiful chocolate, the bottom half was a luxuriant bed of mallow, but the real prize was the top half, which was the jelly element, red and delicious, analagous to the Jaffa Cake's "smashing orangey bit in the middle."
It had kind of a cult status, possibly because of its inclusion in a Victoria Wood routine, or because Morrissey mentioned it in interviews. Did Alan Bennett mention it in a play or am I now getting delirious?
The Jelly Mallow had a sister confection - the Toffee Mallow.
Now that you describe it, it does sound vaguely familiar. Unless I'm just imagining it. Amyone else remember the Jelly Mallow?
ReplyDeleteAnyone remember Banjo bar?
ReplyDeleteYup, I do!
ReplyDeletePlease take a trip down memory lane and check out my Bring Back Banjo Campaign vid ->

Will take a look, BBB.
ReplyDeleteYes I remember the Jelly Mallow. I bought a catering sized box of 40, and ate my way through them in the 1970's Yum. Wish I could get them now.
ReplyDeleteMight be available (or a close facsimile) on the Internet from one of those nostalgia sweetie places. Worth a try.
