WHAT THE HECK? A JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY...

Here's a nice little tale from JOURNEY Into MYSTERY
#85 by STAN LEE and DON HECK, called "FILBERT'S
FRIGHTFUL FUTURE" - enjoy.

  1. Poor old Filbert. If only it'd occurred to him that anyone with the genius to build a time machine doesn't need to use it to get rich - he can just sell the patent to his time machine.

As for the art; definitely Don Heck at his best. I wonder if Filbert was related to Tony Stark?

  2. Ah, but it's not enough that he should be rich - he doesn't want anyone else getting rich by using his invention. I noticed the slight resemblance to TS as well. I think it's the moustache that does it.

  3. I always liked Don Heck- sometimes his inking style was too good for comics and some of it was lost in the printing, but he could draw desperate men, beautiful women, and threatening spaceships like no-one else.
These 'Twilight Zone' tales of the 1959-64 era are variable( especially if Stan was on autopilot) but anything by Ditko, Kirby or Heck was worth reading.

  4. NP, to me, Heck's ink line sometimes seemed like a stronger version of Colletta's. His '60s Avengers stories were magic, but his artwork lost something towards the end of his career. I think his style just loosened up too much. Same thing happened with Kirby and Ditko, unfortunately.
