My pal Robert touched down in Fireball Junior this morning (which then flew off), so I thought I'd show a photie (as we say in Glasgow) of him. He talks (at the press of a button), and his eyes light up (though not in synchronisation to his speech) at the flick of a switch, and his chest lights up when he's speaking (but not in sync to each word). I was going to make a video, but I've forgotten how to put it on the blog, so the above piccie will have to do. His eyes flash from one-to-another, then both at the same time - hours of endless fun (though if it's hours it's not endless, but you know what I mean). The cord you see belongs to the roller blind, not Robert. "Hey, Rob - have you got Venus's 'phone number? Give it 'ere, you pile of nuts and bolts."
Last Friday (July 31st) was the end of an era for me because on that day the council collected my TV, CD/cassette player and DVD player for recycling. It was a poignant moment saying goodbye to old friends (I bought the CD player in 1998 and the DVD player in 2002) but it was a cathartic moment as well.

DeleteNo, I won't be replacing any of the items, Kid. I bought the CD/cassette player in 1998 when I was 32 and I'm now 60 so it's slightly less than half of my life but I've owned a TV of one kind or another since I was 13 so it's quite strange to no longer own one. By the way, it cost £23.21 to have the items collected. I was told to put them outside for collection by 7am but I put them out at 6am and they were collected only 20 minutes later!
ReplyDeleteAh, you're older than I thought, CJ, you ol' coffin-dodger. Was it definitely the council who collected them? Maybe it was someone in your street who fancied the look of them.
DeleteI heard men's voices outside and the clunk of a van door closing so I assume it was the council's collection team.

Round my way, 'travellers' sometimes 'collect' stuff that people put out for uplift. Anything like that happen in Wales?

I've picked up a few things that have been left out by locals, in most cases I have asked mostly stuff for the garden. Colin must hardly have anything in his house now as I don't think he keeps boons, mags etc. Not a bad thing as I have too much stuff including over 100 CDs that just sit in my loft.
ReplyDeleteAh, but they're all doorways into happy times gone by, that we'd probably forget if we didn't have these things to remind us, McS. Incidentally, blog visits for today as I type are now 25,177.

DeleteBut I'm not getting any younger and don't want folk left with too much clutter to clear when my time comes ( hopefully not for a while yet) I'll keep comics, music etc that are really meaningful to me but I personally don't need loads of items now.

Today, I've had 2, 238 visits as I type, and 54,188 this month - and we're only in the first week, McS. I guess someone likes this blogsite, eh? Nobody needs loads of items, but it's nice to have them all the same. I DO need to cut back and clear some out though, but that's for another time.
DeleteShame about Linda's dad, hope he's on the mend and pain-free soon. Must be a stressful time for you. Seeing as your own house is empty at the moment, just remind me of your address and where you keep your valuables, will you?

DeleteKid, round my way we referred to travellers as gypsies or "gippoes" but I remember my father saying "They're not gypsies, they're Irish tinkers!"
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I don't know if gypsies/travellers/tinkers were involved but I did have something taken from outside my house. My previous TV was a Sony Trinitron which I left outside for collection in January 2011 and on top of it I placed a tiny b/w portable TV with a 5" screen which got pinched before the collection team arrived. A few years earlier my mother had a microwave oven pinched from outside her house even though she lived in a cul-de-sac in a small village!
Paul, I still own 3 radios, a laptop, a smartphone and 4 tablets so I haven't become a hermit just yet!

If they left a comment, CJ, it'd probably take me the rest of my life to reply to them. To be honest, I'm slightly mystified as to why my visitor stats are so high. Maybe it's a glitch of some kind?
DeleteAs for the group you refer to, they ripped my mother off at least a couple of times a few years back when she was still at home, the b@st@rds. For hundreds of pounds, too. If any come to my door now, I tell 'em to feck off or I'll set about them. Pure bluff on my part, of course, as I'm no longer fit enough to even properly stand or walk, never mind fight, but they don't know that.
My TV and DVD player are gone but I've got a memento of them because I've still got the scart cable that connected them and I've got a memento of my CD player too as I still own two CDs (Beatles' Let It Be and ABBA Voyage) even though I can't play them anymore but all the tracks are available on YouTube.

DeleteColin I have a few vynl LPs but no record player ( yet!). I also have a Hulk t-shirt that's way too small for me now that has the original transfer from MWOM issue 1 on it.
ReplyDeleteI'll butt in while you're waiting for CJ's response, McS (just so you don't feel ignored). I've still got all the vinyl LPs I bought over the years since my teens, as well as some CD equivalents as well. And I've got two unused Hulk transfers from MWOM #1. Dunno if I'd be able to iron them onto a t-shirt now - they might not work.
