Do you think ugly people are aware they're ugly? I mean genuinely hideous people, not ordinary folk who just lack confidence and self-esteem. The reason I ask is because, when I came to do this post about Plug's (from The Bash Street Kids) own 1977 comic, I wondered if it would be allowed today as Plug's whole 'schtick' was being ugly (though, in seeming answer to my opening question, he didn't consider himself to be anything but handsome). A strip devoted to essentially making fun of an ugly buggah flies in the face of the whole 'woke' ethos that permeates far too many things in our modern age.
Anyway, I suppose that's by-the-by. A few months back I bought two copies of Plug #1 via eBay and have been planning on doing a post about it for some time. I bought my original copy in 1977, but I don't think I kept it, though it could be lingering forgotten in a cupboard somewhere, in which case I now have three copies. As I leafed through its pages, I realised there was nothing in it which really appealed to me, so I can't be bothered scanning anything from it apart from the front and back covers. Anyone remember this DCT weekly comic and, more relevant, did anyone actually buy it? (Apart from me, obviously.)
The other strips were Hugh's Zoo, Tony Jackpot, First Ada, Digby The Human Mole, Eebagoom, Sea Urchin, Ava Banana, The Games Gang, Antchester United, The Bandshees, Supporting Life, Lumpy Gibbon, and Gnoo Faces. The art was nice for the most part, but I found the characters uninspiring. In fact, I haven't even bothered to read them.
As for yours truly, do I consider myself ugly or good-looking? Well, given that another of my nicknames is Mr. Handsome, I think that's all I need to say on the matter.
the ladies look, then look again;
I'm toned and fit, and tall and dark,
in my blue eyes resides a spark
which makes them tremble deep within
and lets me turn their hearts to 'sin'.
If truth be told, I'm quite a tease,
but women's eagerness to please -
to play the game of 'birds and bees'
and do their utmost to appease
my appetite for pleasures rare -
lets me perform with style to spare.
I am Adonis come to life,
all women wish to be my wife.
I conquer hearts with languid ease
and watch them buckle at the knees.
I laugh as their chins hit the floor
whenever I pass through a door.
E'en Sapphic slaves can't help but 'turn'
so filled with lust for me they burn,
their 'lady love' they all do spurn
and nevermore will they return
to their past wicked wanton ways,
such is the power of my gaze.
My skin is firm and tanned and smooth,
my honeyed words do serve to soothe
the fever in their lustful hearts,
pierced by cherubic Cupid's darts.
I cannot fail, I am God's gift
to women who require a 'lift'
to make them feel desired and young
by one so manly and well-hung,
who charms them with a silver tongue,
whose name and fame are so far-flung -
for me they'd all lay down and die...
and do so with a grateful sigh.
Who am I? Why...
I'm Mr. Handsome.

I had never heard of this comic until now. How wonderful that Pug was felt worthy of his own title. One has to wonder what the editorial staff at DCT were thinking at the time?
ReplyDeleteYou don't think much of the other strips, presumably they were new creations but were any based on other supporting characters?
Anon, could you adopt a name, please, as too many anonymous commenters can be confusing. The art on some of the other strips was okay, it was the characters that failed to impress me. I'll add the names of them later.
DeleteHello Kid, Sorry about that. For some reason Google didn't I.D. me.
DeleteNae bother, T47. It's just that if there are too many 'Anons' commenting on a post, it becomes difficult to tell one from another.
DeleteDespite not being into UK kids comics in 1977 ( wellI was 17) I did pick this up for some reason. I do recall that even given my age at the time that this was not a great comic and I couldn't understand why Plug got his own title ( as I recall it was printed on nice paper). Good question on whether ugly folk know they are ugly ( this is not including any poor souls disfigured etc) I 'm sure some do and probably waste their life worrying about it by not participating in life and hiding away which is a shame. Others of course just love themselves sometimes a bit too much. Of course some pretty folk can have ugly personalities as well thankfully you have managed not to fall into that category !
ReplyDeleteDrat, McS. That means I'll have to work on making my personality more ugly, seeing as it's clearly not ugly enough for you to notice it. However, thanks for the compliment - though I'll probably spend the rest of the day wondering if you were indulging in irony.
DeleteMaking fun of somebody because they are ugly or ginger or overweight or gay or black is actually just nasty and it doesn't mean you're "woke" if you refuse to participate.
ReplyDeleteOr there's the view that if you're going to make fun of anybody, you should make fun of everybody, CJ. Why should anyone get a pass just because of the colour of their hair, etc. And do you think ugly, ginger, fat (that's the word you were looking for), gay, black or whatever type of people, never make fun of others? I think that those who refuse to 'participate' in seeing the funny side (and there usually is one) of certain people and situations are most definitely being 'woke'.
DeleteHi Kid, I've had a busy week, the details of which I won't bore you with. Looks like I have a few posts to catch up with but in the meantime, I wondered if you'd seen this auction that is taking place next week over two days? Something for everyone.....

Took a wee look, M, and there's some nice stuff there. Don't think I'll be bidding though, as there's too much stuff I'd probably want.
DeleteYes I agree. Better to admire from afar. I had a stroke of luck yesterday, though. I went into our local charity shop, bought a couple of things and as I paid for them, I spotted a basket full of things ready to go on the shelves. One thing caught my eye. Arrow Games jigsaw of James Bond 007, Sean Connery, Thunderball. I snapped it up for £3.49. Googled it when I got home, it's from 1965, 1 of a set of 4. Hope it's complete, I've got the wife working on it.
ReplyDeleteI featured the covers of all four on the blog a few years back, M, as well as some re-creations by Walter Howarth, though I don't recall whether or not he was the original artist. £3.49 was a proper steal.
DeleteThe name of the post is Walter Howarth James Bond Paintings and he painted two of the Jigsaw boxes, with the other two being painted by another artist. Walter painted all four re-creations though.
