The Early Bird was a bit of a dive, but I didn't mind. Used to get scrambled egg and chips there quite often. At least until I discovered Eve's Cafe, then I didn't go to the EB quite so often.Kidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07224781868125924337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3740495193314269367.post-244927863187050922021-06-26T16:38:38.174+01:002021-06-26T16:38:38.174+01:00I do remember where The Early Bird cafe was , betw...I do remember where The Early Bird cafe was , between the Waverly Rd junction and the Salvation Army Citadel, but never ate there. A quick look at Google Street View confirms cafe still along there, but under different names.
I most recently visited Southsea back in August 2019 and loved strolling around (but it was a glorious sunny day).
.baggseyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01126205345158158957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3740495193314269367.post-76764030608308507432021-06-26T16:02:07.969+01:002021-06-26T16:02:07.969+01:00Yeah, it's amazing how quickly one can adjust ...Yeah, it's amazing how quickly one can adjust to new places, people, and experiences, isn't it, B? And when I returned to Southsea/Portsmouth in 1985 for a few months, it seemed like I'd never been away. I've wanted to revisit since then for years, but if I ever do, it'll be strange to see the changes that have undoubtedly occurred - like no Debenhams, and HMS Vernon being a shopping centre, etc. No doubt I'll lament the shops I used to frequent that disappeared years back after I left. Do you remember a cafe called The Early Bird (just along from the Salvation Army Hall) in Albert Road? It used to have a catfish (or two) in a tank, which used to sit on a shelf. I know the ...A very interesting “think” piece, Kid. I know the feeling you mean. Upon my return from my first the US in 1977, it was a weird feeling to be dropped back in your everyday life as though nothing had happened, yet in those weeks away your entire world view had been reshaped by new experiences, new people, new places. I think that it takes a while for one’s brain to process the information and impact of it. Sounds like the experience was significant enough to have stayed in your mind all these years. (Even the trip to Gosport!).

Sounds like you lived in Southsea long enough for it to become “local” in your mind, and Southsea remains a mental extension of your usual stamping ground. At least that’s the way I feel about a number of places around the globe I’ve returned back to sufficiently to feel that I can walk around and feel comfortable.
It would be interesting if past Southsea luminaries who spent time there felt the same way (Arthur Conan-Doyle, H G Wells, Dickens, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Neville Shute, etc).
baggseyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01126205345158158957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3740495193314269367.post-42122525296509296152018-03-14T13:55:57.848+00:002018-03-14T13:55:57.848+00:00I know exactly what you mean, VW - there was a wom...I know exactly what you mean, VW - there was a woman like that at my library - after I'd left, unfortunately. I still see her from time to time today and she gives me a little wave. She started out in healthcare and while we were dating, she changed to a less stressful job. My god she was hot...if you've ever seen of *ahem* "those" movies that has a really sexy librarian under all those clothes and glasses, you'll know what I mean.

Not sure where I'm going with this, but yeah...so Superman? He surely can't be a teacher with such an obviously limited intellect. I used to work in my local central library - I left after about 6 months because some of the people were awful. One of my old schoolmates says I look like the guy with the 'tache in Parks & Recreation. I tuned in for a few episodes - he's right. Yeah, the termite is an @asshole, no doubt about it. Sounds like one of those nut-jobs who goes on killing sprees in schools 'cos he can't get no respect. The episode i watched last night (s02e08) spent half of the episode ripping on librarians, which i didn't really get at the time. Today it's a much funnier episode.

Dialogue included:

"Punk-ass book jockeys"

"I should have known you'd use a low blow, dirty pool, BS move like that. That's why everybody hates the library."

"Every time she laughs, an angel dies. Even telemarketers avoid her. Her birth was payback for the sins of man. But you know the worst thing about her?
She works for the library."

This termite you've got in your woodwork certainly upped my enjoyment level of that episode.-3-https://www.blogger.com/profile/18201804552651989442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3740495193314269367.post-40906292103136629522018-03-13T20:44:56.781+00:002018-03-13T20:44:56.781+00:00Says everyone (about you) who's just read your...Says everyone (about you) who's just read your comment. @sshole!Kidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07224781868125924337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3740495193314269367.post-50229068796853754072018-03-13T17:51:25.999+00:002018-03-13T17:51:25.999+00:00Go, will ya, just leave...Go, will ya, just leave...libraryguyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15643253055281694828noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3740495193314269367.post-41486869113182693592018-03-11T08:07:05.809+00:002018-03-11T08:07:05.809+00:00He appeared again in 1988 (I think), LH, on a cove...He appeared again in 1988 (I think), LH, on a cover by Dave Gibbons.
