It was assumed by readers to be the voice of God, but I don't think it was ever explicitly stated. Obviously, by the '90s, comics were more relaxed about such things, but The Spectre being a manifestation of 'The Wrath Of God' is a bit out-of-sync with New Testament theology.Kidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07224781868125924337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3740495193314269367.post-42073738160818972412020-02-17T08:50:02.134+00:002020-02-17T08:50:02.134+00:00The 1990s Spectre series was pretty explicit that ...The 1990s Spectre series was pretty explicit that the title character was an aspect of the biblical God. It was all very well and sensitively handled, maybe due to writer John Ostrander being, I believe, a theologian. It's also, in my opinion, one of the very best comics runs if the 90s.Dave Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10562199843047738071noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3740495193314269367.post-81089080475932050332020-02-17T07:08:34.086+00:002020-02-17T07:08:34.086+00:00I believe you're right, GP. As you say, revealing him as Mephisto was a later development.

******

If you're talking about the movies, never seen one, BS. Or read the magazine, actually - apart from a Mad parody (as in a parody of Mad) that Barry Pearl showed in a guest post.
