BIRTHDAY WISHES TO ONE OF BRITAIN'S FAVOURITE BRUINS (UPDATED)...

Rupert Bear...

Everyone knows his name, and he's 100 years old today.  Whereas I only feel (okay, and maybe look) like 100.  Anyone out there a Rupert Bear fan?  Don't be shy now.  And, below, is the very first appearance of Rupert's long-running strip in The Daily Express, as reprinted in The Adventures Of Rupert The Little Lost Bear back in 1921.

I love Rupert. In my younger days I only read the short couplets and studied the pictures, so going back as an adult and reading the full stories was refreshing. The 2020 annual has been added to my letter to Santa, so here's hoping.

I never paid much attention to Rupert when I was a kid, M, if I even knew about him back then. I remember the TV show from my teenage years 'cos it was usually on around dinner time (between 12 and 1 maybe), but it wasn't until the late '70s that I saw a book in a dentist's waiting room and noticed the charm of the art. It was because of that memory that I bought the 50th Annual in 1985, buying the occasional Annual from then on, especially anniversary ones.

I don't remember ever reading Rupert, but what I do remember was a Doctor Who comic drawn in the style of a Rupert strip. It was drawn by John Ridgway, so as I'm sure you'd expect, it was gorgeous. I didn't own the original magazine it was published in, but had a nice digest-sized reprint that came free with Golden Wonder crisps in the late 80s.

I think I've got the original of that 'Dr. Rupert' story, DS. John Ridgway would be a good artist for Rupert.

Kid, did you hear the programme about Rupert on Radio 4 Extra yesterday (actually I listened to the repeat at 2.30 am this morning)?

No, didn't know about it, CJ. I'll maybe listen to it on BBC iPlayer if I get a chance.
