DOCTOR DITKO WILL SEE YOU NOW...

Copyright MARVEL COMICS

When STEVE DITKO was at the top of his game, he was hard to beat.  His later cartoony RANDIAN rants leave me cold, both in the art and 'story' departments, but his reputation as a legend is secure because of his SPIDER-MAN, DOCTOR STRANGE, CREEPY, EERIE, CHARLTON, and early ATLAS/MARVEL work.

I'm too lazy to look up where the accompanying tale was first published, but this printing comes from the UK title, SECRETS Of The UNKNOWN #161, published by ALAN CLASS & Co.  If you're an aspiring comicbook artist, look and see how it's done.

Don't hold back now, PW - did you like his art or not? (Hee hee!)

I was not a fan of his later political screeds. I did find Mr A interesting as a philosophical look at superheroes. I can definitely see the split coming with him and Stan over Spider-Man though. Ditko and Lee were going in different directions with the character.

Steve didn't like Stan calling Spider-Man 'Spidey', or the 'web-spinner' or 'web-head', etc. I think had Steve scripted the tales, they'd have been a dry, humourless read. Much like his political/philosophical screeds.
