THE NERVS AT CHRISTMAS...

From SMASH! Incorporating FANTASTIC #158, December 28th 1968

Still in the spirit of the season, here's the Christmas episode of The NERVS from 1968 by KEN REID.  So when was the last time you you saw such a well-illustrated strip in a modern comic?  H'mm, you're having to think about that, aren't you?

Must admit I don't read that many modern comics, not when there is still so much art from 'back in the day' to still discover. Well, there goes the next 10 minutes or so examining all of the detail and background laughs in another fine piece of Ken Reid art.
Great to see this.

I knew you'd like it, PC. More soon.

Ken Reid was a comic genius (with Leo Baxendale) and although we had other truly great artists / cartoonists back in the day these 2 were game changers. Only the great Hunt Emerson (imho) comes close in art style and detail to Ken Reid, but I would assume that like Ken, Hunt is told in no uncertain terms to keep it "clean" - Anyhoo have a great Hogmanay / New Year and as always "Lang may yer lum reek" and don't drink to much coke (I know your tea total) or eat too much Black Bun (actually I have never had a real black bun and have only ever seen it drawn in Oor Wullie and the Broons strips)

Y'know, PM, I don't think I even know what black bun actually is. (A bun of some kind, presumably.) Like you, I'm only familiar with the name because of the Oor Wullie and The Broons - I've certainly never eaten one. I think I'll check out Greggs to see if they sell it. And have you ever had a first-footer carrying a lump of coal? All the best for 2017.

Waaay back when I was a kid my Mum and Dads neighbours / friends first footed us with a piece of coal or some salt but they also had food or drink (even although my mum and dad didn't drink) but not since the early 60's its one of those traditions everyone thinks we still do but don't but like folk to think we still do. Have a good one I'm off to tidy my house up as having a few friends over on Saturday for a wee drink and a Bowie night ( a nightmare to you I imagine as we will also be talking football as its the old firm game and my teams local Derby against Motherwell - the girls can chat about girly things of course) sadly no comics will be discussed as they all think I'm weird liking them at my age :(.

I'll either be in my scratcher or my back room with the lights turned out. I HATE Hogmanay. Bah, humbug. I'm convinced that holding the Old Firm Game on that date is just an excuse for the police to give themselves some overtime. Wonder what the aftermath will be like? Of course you're weird liking comics at your age (as am I), but being weird is better than being boring. (Unless you're seriously weird in a Josef Fritzl way of course.) Have a good 'un.

LOL I agree I think having the old firm game on Hogmanay is stupid as are a large section of the old firm fans which is the problem. I'm not into New Year either and get scunnered by Christmas as well (lasts too long) usually I just watch a DVD and that's it - only having a few friends over for a fw hours (as it link up with a few events this year) then its off to the (nice) local for a sensible night and a few pints. I hate part time (and full time) loud mouthed drunks that get blitz just because it Hogmanay thankfully once most of their Xmas Visa card bills arrive in a few weeks time, they disappear for a while.

I can't wait for it all to pass, and for things to return to 'normal'. Have you got your Dr. Strange Omnibus yet? It's too good not to own.

I just googled black bun and it's a kind of fruit cake wrapped in pastry which doesn't look very appealing - I no longer eat ordinary Christmas cake with marzipan and icing either. My father disliked sweet food and I think I'm becoming the same in my old age. I'm not a fan of New Year either but I do stay up till midnight and then hang up my new calendar. Then I go on the internet which is more fun than standing around singing Auld Lang Syne with a load of drunks. Auld Lang Syne just makes me feel sad anyway. People complain about the enforced jollity of Christmas but the enforced jollity of New Year's Eve is far worse in my opinion.

Must admit, I do like Christmas cake, CJ - delicious. What annoys me more than the enforced jollity is the enthusiastically self-inflicted drunkenness. Just you wait until I run the world - there'll be a few changes made.
