JIM REEVES - O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM...

As it's getting near to Christmas, here's a nice relaxing
Yuletide-themed song to start the ball rolling.  This'll take you
back to your old school hall when you and all your classmates
sang such yuletide hymns at Christmas.

Very nice but he's singing the American version which has a different tune to the British version (I prefer ours). Every year in late November I buy the Christmas issue of BBC Music magazine which always includes a free CD of Christmas music (I only buy the magazine once a year for the free Xmas CD). This year's Christmas issue comes out tomorrow and the CD features Christmas music by the King Singers so I'll look forward to that. I also buy BBC Wildlife magazine at this time of year for the free calendar.

That's the tune we sung at school, CJ, so I've always assumed that it was the British one. Isn't it the other one that's the American version?

Well, the tune that Jim Reeves is singing isn't the tune of Little Town that I recognize. By the way, Kid, I'm mystified that my comments to Crivens no longer feature my avatar picture or the blogger sign - I thought it was something to do with my tablet but I sent the above comment from my laptop. My comments to other blogs appear as normal. And I've now bought the issues of BBC Music and Wildlife magazines that I mentioned above so I've got my free Christmas CD and free 2017 calendar. Plus I bought the Beano Christmas special and some mince pies and a jar of cranberry sauce...Christmas is a-coming woo hoo !

I'd have to hear the other version again to be sure which one's which, CJ. It could be that I'm just so familiar with the Jim Reeves' version that I imagine it was the tune I heard in childhood. As for the missing avatar, it's no mystery. Back in April 2015, you said you wouldn't delete any more of your comments, but I'm still discovering ones you've deleted subsequent to that date. (The last one I noticed - recently - was in June 2015.) I did tell you that if you continued to do that, I simply wouldn't publish your comments, the reason being that I object to taking the time and thought to respond to a comment, only to find that the comment is later deleted. This makes it a waste of my time responding in the first place, and confuses later readers who wonder what I'm wittering on about in response to a comment that is no longer there. This means that I then have to delete my own reply, and do a spot of editing to the order of other comments in order to make them run in sequence. So what I'm doing, CJ, is cutting and pasting your comments so that you can't delete them. However, if you continue to delete older comments, I'll simply stop publishing you altogether. No bad feeling, but I'm simply not prepared to waste my time.

Without a word of a lie, CJ, I noticed just last week that one of your comments had been 'removed by the author' in June of 2015, although you had said in April of 2015 that you wouldn't. However, perhaps your other deleted comments were removed before then and I'm just noticing them now when I revisit old posts. (Big Brother is watching you!) Your avatar doesn't provide a link to anywhere anyway, so it's hardly a handicap if it's absent.

Jim Reeves, the staple of all Charity shop LP piles along with his mate Klaus Wunderlich. The Reevester always makes me thing of my Mum and Dad as it was in their own record pile back in the Sixties. Listening to that Christmas song here brought a tear to my eye as I went back to a time when my Mum drank a Snowball and my Dad held a Bells on the rocks as they listened to Jim, Gerry Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey and Glen Miller on Christmas Eve circa 1969.

It's a brilliant Christmas album, Woodsy, and should be in everyone's collection. Try telling any of my pals that 'though. What's wrong with them? Don't they like Christmas music? I'm a kid again whenever I listen to it, which is strange, as I only heard it for the first time when I was about 17. It just reminds me of childhood for some reason. I'm a big Glenn Miller fan as well.
